Frequently asked questions
How early should we start looking for an au pair?
Our regular families often plan several months ahead. Around six months gives the best opportunity to find a suitable match, particularly because au pairs may still be studying, arranging documents and preparing for travel. If your need is sooner, contact us anyway — we regularly work with families on shorter timescales.
Do we have to belong to a particular Christian church or denomination?
No. What matters is that your family genuinely identifies as Christian and is involved in a church or fellowship. We work across mainstream Protestant, non-denominational and Catholic traditions. We look at compatibility between the family and au pair rather than requiring both to attend the same denomination.
Will the au pair attend our church?
Often an au pair will come with your family at first. They remain free to choose a suitable local church, especially if another congregation offers stronger opportunities for friendships, young-adult fellowship or worship that better fits their background.
Can we speak to someone before applying or matching?
Yes. Christian Au Pairs is a personal agency, not an online profile database. We can talk with you by phone, video call, WhatsApp or email and help you think through the type of placement that would suit your family.
What background checks and references do you ask for?
Our assessment includes childcare experience and references, a church-leader reference, a personal interview and the checks and documents required for the placement. We take particular interest in character, reliability, faith, church participation and suitability for caring for children.
How much should we pay our au pair?
The final arrangement is agreed between the family and au pair. Christian Au Pairs currently recommends AUD 250 for 25 hours, AUD 300 for 30 hours and AUD 350 for 35 hours. The arrangement must also comply with any Australian employment requirements that apply.
Can our au pair drive our car?
If driving is part of the role, discuss it before matching. The family should pay the programme-related insurance and petrol and make sure the au pair is safe and competent to drive in Australia before they drive children independently.
What if the placement is not working out?
Contact Christian Au Pairs early so we can understand the problem and help both sides communicate. For an ordinary Australian early ending, the working policy is two weeks' notice, during which the au pair should ordinarily retain accommodation, normal agreed duties and agreed pay. Immediate safety or safeguarding concerns take priority over the ordinary notice process.
Current Australian visa and employment rules must be checked
The proposed arrangement must fit the au pair's current Australian visa conditions and any applicable employment requirements. Christian Au Pairs confirms the family-side placement details, but current Department of Home Affairs and employment rules control where legal requirements apply.
